Davallia trichomanoides var. lorrainii (Hance, 1866) Holttum, 1966
Description
Scales nearly black with highly contrasting white setae, 4-8 mm long by 1.2-2 mm broad (D. t. lorrainii Rhizome1). Indusium 1-1.5 mm long by 1 mm broad (D. t. lorrainii Indusia).

Continental Asia: India (Kerala 2 coll.); Thailand (many coll.); Cambodia (3 coll.); Vietnam (Annam 6 coll., Cochinchina 1 coll.).
Malesia: Sumatra (Acèh 1 coll., W. Coast 1 coll., E. Coast 3 coll.); Malay Peninsula (Kedah 2 coll., Penang 4 coll., Selangor 1 coll., Negri Sembilan 1 coll.); Java ? (1 coll.); Borneo (Sabah 1 coll., Kalimantan Timur 4 coll.); Philippines (Luzon many coll., Bohol 1 coll., Uma 1 coll., Mindanao 4 coll.); Central Sulawesi (Soroako 5 coll.).
Ecology
Epiphytic or epilithic, most in wet places but sometimes in exposed, dry places and savanna. Altitude 100-1800 m.
Note
According to Hoshizaki (oral communication) this variety is very distinct in cultivation and could be a good species. From herbarium material, however, the varietal status is more satisfactory. It could be that the cultivated plants are derived from one or few extreme forms.
